The National High School BBQ Association® (NHSBBQA®) respects student privacy, school authority, and family consent regarding the use of names, images, video, audio, and student work.
This policy explains how media and likeness may be used in connection with NHSBBQA®-affiliated educational programs while remaining aligned with school policy, FERPA principles, and student protection standards.
NHSBBQA® operates in support of schools and educators.
Schools and districts retain primary authority over student media permissions
NHSBBQA® does not override school or district media policies
Participation in NHSBBQA® programs does not require media participation
Students may fully participate in educational programming without appearing in media.
This policy applies to the use of:
Student names (limited use)
Photographs and images
Video and audio recordings
Student-created work (projects, food presentations, portfolios)
Event coverage and promotional materials
Media use involving students occurs only when appropriate consent has been obtained.
Consent may be provided through:
School or district media release forms
NHSBBQA® event or program media releases
Parent/guardian authorization where required
Consent procedures follow school and district policy first.
When consent is granted, media may be used for:
Educational documentation
Program promotion and awareness
News, social media, and digital platforms
Recognition of student participation and achievement
Sponsor acknowledgment related to educational programming
All uses are intended to be positive, respectful, and age-appropriate.
NHSBBQA® does not:
Sell student images or likenesses
License student likenesses for commercial resale
Use media in a misleading or exploitative manner
Associate students with inappropriate products or messaging
Use student media without proper authorization
Full student names are not required for participation
When used publicly, student names are typically limited to first name and last initial, unless otherwise authorized
Schools may request removal or correction of identifying information
Schools, parents, or guardians may:
Decline media participation
Request reasonable removal of media content when feasible
Requests should be directed through:
The student’s school (primary authority), and/or
NHSBBQA® program leadership
NHSBBQA® will make reasonable efforts to honor valid requests.
Media captured by sponsors, partners, or third-party vendors must follow this policy
Third parties may not independently collect or use student media without authorization
All sponsor activations involving students must be approved and supervised
Media use is managed in alignment with FERPA principles:
NHSBBQA® does not maintain official education records
Schools control directory information decisions
Media does not replace school recordkeeping
Unauthorized or inappropriate use of student media may result in:
Removal of content
Revocation of authorization
Termination of licensure or charter
Further corrective action as appropriate
