️ About the National High School BBQ Association® (NHSBBQA®)

The National High School BBQ Association serves as the national educational framework for school-based barbecue and live-fire cooking programs.

NHSBBQA® exists to:

  • support teachers and schools

  • protect students through age-appropriate design

  • elevate barbecue as an educational pathway

NHSBBQA® is education-first.
Competitions, events, and technology exist to support learning — not replace it.

Middle School BBQ (MSBBQ)

Middle School BBQ (MSBBQ) is the introductory, school-based live-fire learning pathway for students in grades 5–8.

In MSBBQ, students learn:

  • fire awareness and responsibility

  • teamwork and communication

  • foundational culinary skills

  • safety-scaffolded hands-on learning

MSBBQ is designed specifically for middle school environments and is often informally referred to as Kids Que or Junior Pitmasters.
In schools, MSBBQ is the formal educational framework.

‍ High School BBQ (HSBBQ)

High School BBQ (HSBBQ) is a Career & Technical Education–aligned pathway for students in grades 9–12.

HSBBQ integrates:

  • culinary arts

  • food safety and sanitation

  • leadership and team operations

  • menu planning and costing

  • competition as summative assessment

HSBBQ builds on MSBBQ and serves as a capstone learning experience within the NHSBBQA® ecosystem.

Project BASTE Learning™ (PBL)

Project BASTE Learning™ is the NHSBBQA® project-based learning (PBL) model.

BASTE stands for:

  • Build

  • Apply

  • Showcase

  • Test

  • Evaluate

Students learn by doing — planning, preparing, cooking, presenting, and reflecting — with real-world relevance and measurable outcomes.

Live Fire Learning™ & the Live Fire Learning Lab™

Live Fire Learning™ is the educational philosophy that guides how students interact with fire, food, and responsibility.

The Live Fire Learning Lab™ is the physical or mobile environment where this learning takes place — whether on a school campus, CTE center, or approved instructional site.

Together, they emphasize:

  • respect for fire and tools

  • safety-first instruction

  • experiential, hands-on learning

  • mentorship and accountability

PITMSTR™ Technology Platform

PITMSTR™ is the digital platform that supports the NHSBBQA® ecosystem.

PITMSTR™ helps schools manage:

  • team participation

  • project documentation

  • judging and assessment

  • student portfolios

  • data-driven learning outcomes

Technology enhances learning — it never replaces teachers.

THE S.L.A.B.® is the national showcase and capstone event for MSBBQ and HSBBQ students, where learning is demonstrated publicly through cooking, teamwork, and professionalism.
