The LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ Safety Doctrine establishes the official fire safety, operational, supervision, and compliance standards governing all NHSBBQA® sanctioned programs, events, classrooms, and competition sites.
This doctrine applies to:
High School Barbecue (HSBBQ) programs
Middle School Barbecue (MSBBQ) programs
Project BASTE Learning™ classrooms
Competition trailers and outdoor cook sites
THE S.L.A.B.® National Championship
All affiliated state associations
Compliance with this doctrine is mandatory for all NHSBBQA® Charter Members.
The National High School BBQ Association® (NHSBBQA®) is the sanctioning and governing body for LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ implementation.
This Safety Doctrine is issued under the authority of NHSBBQA® and serves as the foundational safety framework for all sanctioned activities involving:
Live fire cooking
Charcoal combustion
Wood-fired cooking
Propane systems
Outdoor fire-based culinary instruction
This document establishes institutional safety expectations, not optional classroom guidelines.

The LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ operates under the following Ten Commandments of Live Fire Safety:
Respect the flame. Fire is a controlled industrial process.
Maintain a clearly enforced safety perimeter.
Wear proper protective equipment at all times.
Never leave live fire unattended.
Verify fuel, airflow, and ignition systems before lighting.
Maintain immediate access to suppression equipment.
Monitor thermal conditions using calibrated instruments.
Control grease accumulation and flare-up hazards.
Fully extinguish and verify thermal neutrality.
Enforce standards. Safety is leadership.
These principles are visibly posted in all LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ environments.
The LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ Safety Doctrine aligns with established industry standards including:
NFPA 1 — Fire Code
NFPA 96 — Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations
OSHA 29 CFR 1910 — General Industry Fire Safety Standards
Local fire marshal regulations, school district policies, and state education agency requirements supersede where applicable.
NHSBBQA® Charter Members are responsible for ensuring local compliance.
All sanctioned LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ sites must maintain:
Approved fire extinguishers (Class K and ABC as applicable)
Clear and marked safety perimeters
Adult supervision at all times
Fuel storage in accordance with local code
Approved ignition procedures
Calibrated thermometers
Grease management protocols
Post-event thermal verification procedures
Failure to maintain these requirements may result in:
Suspension of Charter status
Loss of competition eligibility
Revocation of LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ authorization
Each LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ location must maintain:
Instructor signature acknowledgment
Fire Marshal review where required
Annual safety verification
Official institutional poster (Version 2.0) must be visibly displayed in:
Classroom environments
Outdoor cooking sites
Competition trailers

Each LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ is assigned a unique Lab Identification Number (LFL-ID) for governance tracking.
Example:

This ID must be included on:
Safety documentation
Competition registrations
Incident reports
Inspection records
Any fire-related incident must be documented and reported within 24 hours to:
Reports must include:
Lab ID
Date and time
Description of incident
Corrective action taken
Supervisor acknowledgment
NHSBBQA® reserves the right to conduct review and corrective action procedures.
The LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ Safety Doctrine is a condition of NHSBBQA® Charter membership.
Failure to comply may result in:
Written warning
Probationary status
Charter suspension
Event disqualification
Permanent revocation
NHSBBQA® maintains full authority to enforce safety standards to protect students, schools, and community partners.
The LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ model integrates live combustion into Career and Technical Education (CTE) environments.
Therefore:
Safety is not optional.
Safety is leadership.
Safety is institutional responsibility.
